Gary Council votes to cut 15 EMS jobs; merges EMS into fire department

Updated: December 29, 2012 11:20AM

GARY ? The City Council kept emergency medical personnel within the fire department, but at a cost of 15 EMS workers? jobs.

The council voted 6-2, with At-Large Councilmen Ron Brewer and Roy Pratt casting the dissenting votes, to accept a salary budget that merges the EMS and fire departments at special Friday evening meeting. The merger reduces the Fire Department to 255 personnel from 270 and creates 36 new Firefighter-EMT positions at a salary of $41,250 per year, a $2,000 increase over the standard firefighter position.

The new positions require both EMT and Firefighter One or Two certification as part of the requirement for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response federal grant that allowed the department to rehire 35 firefighters laid off because of city budget cuts in 2011, Fire Chief Teresa Everett told the council. While many of the EMS workers have basic firefighter training, they don?t have the other levels.

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, who encouraged the council to accept the merger, defied anyone to say the city was choosing firefighters over EMS, a criticism many EMS workers had leveled recently.

?This is a difficult choice of losing all our EMS workers and 35 firefighters,? she said, referring to the council?s decision at one of its October meetings to accept all but the salary portion of the Fire Department?s budget and revert it to the 2012 budget. The council at the time disapproved of some of the promoted positions in the 2013 budget.

?I understand why you reverted. No one ever contemplated that we?d lose EMS,? she said.

Brewer said the whole thing could?ve been avoided if the council had received more information.

?If we?d heard more about the merger in October, and then the EMS hearing about cross-training opportunities four days before firing them? My vote will be ?No,?? he said.

EMS employee Kevin Smith told the council it could still save the 15 workers by changing their status back to civil service, or sworn-in status. Doing so would not change pension status with the state ? the state allows only public safety workers who?re sworn in before their 36th birthday to receive pension benefits ? but would give them protection without jeopardizing the SAFER grant.

?In my 27 years as a paramedic, this is one of my most darkest years,? Smith said. ?I see 15 people who?ve served this city 15, 20, 32 years being let go.?

The mayor said there would be positions within the Building and General Services Department to which the city would give the 15 priority. The new positions wouldn?t affect their retirement because they would still be employed by the city.

[iPad Mini] Alternatives to Apple Smart Cover? (iPad mini)

Apologies for starting another iPad mini cover/case thread but I couldn't find what I was looking for in existing threads.

There are plenty of cases for iPad mini that combine front and back cover. The Invellop one seems to be a favourite. But I'd like the front cover to be detachable. For instance around the house I wouldn't need the front cover on it but when leaving the house I'd put it on.

There are also plenty of good back-only cases, some of which are compatible with Apple Smart Cover. But the Apple Smart Cover is generally seen as overpriced, and plenty of people have complaints about it (doesn't stay flat on the front).

So: does anyone know of any detachable front covers for iPad mini that could be an alternative to Apple Smart Cover?

I found the Macally Shellstand:

but it seems pretty rickety.

Thanks!

This article will be perfect for you if you want information about Affiliate marketing and you would like to have it in an easy to understand format. Your marketing efforts can be enhanced using these tips.

Having a blog can be a successful way to route visitors to your website. The key is to ensure that you use timely, relevant, updated content. When readers learn that your blog contains fresh content from one visit to the next, you?ll have more loyal visitors.

Make a plan for how you will market your webpage and the strategies you will use. Free or inexpensive ways to do so include commenting on blogs, hanging posters in local establishments, and making good use of social networking sites. There are a lot different tactics to draw business. Get creative!

TIP! To achieve success in internet marketing, try using words like ?guaranteed? in your advertisements and related content. People also know that companies sometimes don?t live up to their guarantees, so build up a reputation for honoring your promises.

Free Shipping

If you give incentives to your customers, they might order more quickly. Some popular incentives that other marketers offer include free shipping and free wrapping services. You may want to offer free shipping to the first hundred people purchasing a new product. This is a tried and true method for generating sales.

Make useful information available to your readers on the internet to promote your small business. Always make sure that your site?s content is exclusive to your site. Customers that visit your website should be able to learn about your business, so take care to keep your website stocked with up-to-date information.

TIP! Try and make all your banner advertisements look unique. So give your banner ad a more appealing look to entice more people to click it.

Have you considered making a video to showcase some of your products? Upload the video to YouTube and link it to your website. This will have a tremendous effect on the number of users who visit your site regularly.

Use AJAX and Flash only minimally. While the added interactivity might look nice, it does nothing to optimize your site for search engines. Only use Flash sparingly. Be sure to add plenty of navigation links and keywords to the pages the use Flash.

Another option would be combining products into a package deal and selling it for a lower price. That way the customer gets more bang for their buck. Do not disguise any portion of the terms of redeeming such an offer. Customers truly appreciate full disclosure.

TIP! When you do not regularly update or revamp your website, consider keeping things fresh with a company blog. Google and the ranks like new content, if you do not provide it, your site will move down in rankings.

Create a game to attract more site traffic. Customers may look for something to play online, so something simple can attract many people! Try to carefully and subtly incorporate advertising of your products within the game design. For instance, if you sell products for hair, your game could be about hairstyling and feature the things you sell on your site.

Your company needs a tagline and a logo, no matter how small it is online. Branding is accomplished more easily when these items are present. A good slogan or a visually appealing logo can influence a customer to be loyal over the long term. When a potential customer is looking to purchase your product, your slogan may come to mind, and bring you a new sale.

Target Market

TIP! Whatever you do, make your website stand out among the rest. If your website is distinctive, it is likely to draw plenty of traffic away from more indistinguishable sites.

Know the preferences and needs of your target market, so you can design your website in a manner that will draw them to it. After you know your target market, you can easily provide them with content that will attract them to your website repeatedly.

Avoid seeing Affiliate marketing as job replacement, but more as a hobby. If you see great levels of success, you may think about making it more of a career, but start with low expectations.

Make sure you advertise your business on many popular sites. It might cost you a little money and some time, but it?s an investment that will pay off in a huge way. You want to pick a site that has heavy traffic and offers content in your particular niche or area of industry.

TIP! Updating content frequently is one of the best things you can do to capture the attention of the search engines. Old, outdated information is going to give the viewer the impression that you do not care about your company, and therefore your customers.

Take an international approach, and welcome visitors to your site from around the world. To do this, translate your website into several different languages so that it is understandable to a much broader range of people. You will get many more customers from different parts of the globe, and you are likely to see an impressive boost in traffic. If a customer can easily read the information on your site in their own language, chances are higher that they will buy from you.

Identify specific actions you want your readers to take in your emails. Potential actions could be buying a service or product, subscribing to a magazine or visiting a web page. Tracking the actions your customer takes can help you see how successful your email marketing efforts were.

Successful advertising creates an emotional bond between your clientele and your products. Your reader should be prompted to daydream about using your product. Your customer should ?experience? your product when they read about ti.

TIP! Create a FAQ on your site. You can write the questions with the answers already in mind, and use them to advertise your products! Suggest one of your products for a particular issue or problem.

In conclusion, these tips can help you begin with affiliate marketing. It is our sincere hope that you have found this information valuable and will enjoy applying it. Implement the advice given and you?ll be well on your way to reaching a new level of success.

More serious earthquakes predicted in the Himalayas

Dec. 28, 2012 ? A research team led by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has discovered that massive earthquakes in the range of 8 to 8.5 magnitudes on the Richter scale have left clear ground scars in the central Himalayas.

This ground-breaking discovery has huge implications for the area along the front of the Himalayan Mountains, given that the region has a population density similar to that of New York City.

NTU Professor Paul Tapponnier, who is recognised as a leading scientist in the field of neotectonics, said that the existence of such devastating quakes in the past means that quakes of the same magnitude could happen again in the region in future, especially in areas which have yet to have their surface broken by a temblor.

Published recently in Nature Geosciences, the study by NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) in Singapore and colleagues in Nepal and France, showed that in 1255 and 1934, two great earthquakes ruptured the surface of the earth in the Himalayas. This runs contrary to what scientists have previously thought.

Massive earthquakes are not unknown in the Himalayas, as quakes in 1897, 1905, 1934 and 1950 all had magnitudes between 7.8 and 8.9, each causing tremendous damage. But they were previously thought not to have broken the earth's surface -- classified as blind quakes -- which are much more difficult to track.

However, Prof Tapponnier said that by combining new high resolution imagery and state of the art dating techniques, they could show that the 1934 earthquake did indeed rupture the surface, breaking the ground over a length of more than 150 kilometres, essentially south of the part of the range that harbours Mt Everest.

This break formed along the main fault in Nepal that currently marks the boundary between the Indian and Asian tectonic plates -- also known as the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) fault.

Using radiocarbon dating of offset river sediments and collapsed hill-slope deposits, the research team managed to separate several episodes of tectonic movement on this major fault and pin the dates of the two quakes, about 7 centuries apart.

"The significance of this finding is that earthquakes of magnitude 8 to 8.5 may return at most twice per millennium on this stretch of the fault, which allows for a better assessment of the risk they pose to the surrounding communities," said Prof Tapponnier.

Prof Tapponnier warns that the long interval between the two recently discovered earthquake ruptures does not mean people should be complacent, thinking that there is still time before the next major earthquake happens in the region.

"This does not imply that the next mega-earthquake in the Himalayas will occur many centuries from now because we still do not know enough about adjacent segments of the MFT Mega-thrust," Prof Tapponier explains.

"But it does suggest that areas west or east of the 1934 Nepal ground rupture are now at greater risk of a major earthquake, since there are little or no records of when last earth shattering temblor happened in those two areas."

The next step for Prof Tapponnier and his EOS scientists is to uncover the full extent of such fault ruptures, which will then allow them to build a more comprehensive model of earthquake hazard along the Himalayan front.

About the NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS)

EOS is a premier research institute at NTU, Singapore, which conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies.

Funded by the National Research Foundation's Research Centres of Excellence programme, EOS and its field of research contributes greatly to NTU's research strengths in Sustainability, which is one of the university's Five Peaks of Excellence.

India gang-rape victim dies in hospital

The 23-year-old who was gang-raped in New Delhi and thrown from a bus has died from her injuries in Singapore, where she was being treated. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

By NBC News and wire services

SINGAPORE ? A 23-year-old Indian woman who was gang-raped and severely beaten on a bus in New Delhi died Saturday at a Singapore hospital.

The woman's horrific ordeal galvanized Indians to demand greater protections against widespread sexual violence, and her death was expected to intensify public demands for action by the Indian government.

The victim who has not been identified,?"passed away peacefully" with her family and officials of the Indian embassy by her side," said Kelvin Loh, the chief executive of Mount Elizabeth Hospital, where she had been treated since Thursday. "The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss," he said in a statement.

The woman and a male friend were traveling in a public bus after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who took turns raping her. They also beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into her body resulting in severe organ damage. Both of them were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

?

The woman was airlifted to Singapore on Dec. 26 for specialist treatment, but she had remained in extremely critical condition, Loh said.

The victim had already undergone three abdominal operations before arriving in Singapore, where her condition on Thursday was described as "extremely critical."

"Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days," said Loh on Saturday. "She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."

The attack triggered nationwide protest?over the lack of safety for women, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of the capital.

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government seemed at first caught off guard by the reaction to the attack, which sparked a blame game between politicians and the police.

On Saturday he said that he was aware of the emotions the attack has stirred and that it was up to all Indians to ensure that the young woman's death will not have been in vain.

"These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change," Singh said in a statement. "It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action."

He said the government was examining the penalties for crimes such as rape "to enhance the safety and security of women."

Indian television channels said security had been tightened in New Delhi on Saturday in anticipation of more protests following the woman's death.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Protests continued across New Delhi, India, where around 500 people marched in response to the recent gang rape of a young woman. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Monkey see, monkey do: Visual feedback is necessary for imitating facial expressions

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Research using new technology shows that our ability to imitate facial expressions depends on learning that occurs through visual feedback.

Studies of the chameleon effect confirm what salespeople, tricksters, and Lotharios have long known: Imitating another person's postures and expressions is an important social lubricant.

But how do we learn to imitate with any accuracy when we can't see our own facial expressions and we can't feel the facial expressions of others?

Richard Cook of City University London, Alan Johnston of University College London, and Cecilia Heyes of the University of Oxford investigate possible mechanisms underlying our ability to imitate in two studies published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

In the first experiment, the researchers videotaped participants as they recited jokes and then asked them to imitate four randomly selected facial expressions from their videos. When they achieved what they perceived to be the target expression, the participants recorded the attempt with the click of a computer mouse.

A computer program evaluated the accuracy of participants' imitation attempts against a map of the target expression. In contrast to previous studies that relied on subjective assessments, this new technology allowed for automated and objective measurement of imitative accuracy.

In one experiment, the researchers found that participants who were able to see their imitation attempts through visual feedback improved over successive attempts. But participants who had to rely solely on proprioception -- sensing the relative position of their facial features -- got progressively worse.

These results are consistent with the associative sequence-learning model, which holds that our ability to imitate accurately depends on learned associations between what we see (in the mirror or through feedback from others) and what we feel.

Cook and colleagues conclude that contingent visual feedback may be a useful component of rehabilitation and skill-training programs that are designed to improve individuals' ability to imitate facial gestures.

OUYA Ships 1,200 Development Consoles, Shows Off Its Pre ...

OUYA, the Android-based affordable gaming console that inspired a wide range of reaction from tech watchers and gamers alike when it debuted on Kickstarter back in July 2012, today reached an important milestone: shipping product. Admittedly, it?s just the developer-specific consoles for now, but 1,200 units are now winging their way to actual people, and the company put the pre-release gaming console on video to prove it.

This OUYA unboxing video gives us a glimpse at what the thing looks like in the flesh ? albeit in a transparent plastic casing for both controller and console that doesn?t reflect its anticipated shipping fit and finish. The design isn?t quite final either, as founder Jules Uhrman explains on the video alongside an Ouya designer that the d-pad will change, as will shoulder pad positioning and a number of other internal controller components. Also newly shown off in the video are a micro USB port on the console itself, and an internal fan in the device to keep it cool during intense gaming sessions.

The console looks an awful lot like early renders we?ve seen (minus the limited-edition transparent plastic finish) and Uhrman even goes so far as to actually plug in the console and power it up on video, although we don?t see anything beyond a boot screen as the device loads up with the ?OUYA? branding. At the very least though, we know it turns on, and that it?s shipping in some capacity, which in itself might be?enough?to quiet those who were?skeptical about OUYA?s ability to deliver any kind of working device at all.

Shipping development consoles today also means that OUYA has indeed kept its initial hardware ship date promise ? a rarity among any Kickstarter projects, and impressive given the?popularity?of this one in particular and the amount of scrutiny it received. On-time delivery of these units bodes well for OUYA?s anticipated March 2013 shipping date for consumer units. But there?s still plenty of work to be done on software, and refinements are needed on the hardware side, too, so nothing?s set in stone at this point. Still, it?s great to see OUYA even reach this point, and here?s hoping they make that March launch.

OUYA was created in 2012 by Julie Uhrman, a video game industry veteran who saw an opportunity to open up the last closed game platform ? the TV. Julie and an initial team of game developers and advisors brought the concept to life with the help of Yves Behar and the fuseproject, and took it to Kickstarter in July of 2012. It became one of the most successful Kickstarter projects ever, with tens of thousands of backers pledging to...

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush is being treated in the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital after suffering "a series of setbacks," including a stubborn fever, his spokesman said.

In a brief email Wednesday, Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman in Houston, said the 88-year-old former leader had been admitted Sunday to the ICU at Methodist Hospital. McGrath said Bush, the oldest living former U.S. president, was alert and talking to medical staff.

He said doctors are cautiously optimistic about Bush's treatment and that the former president "remains in guarded condition." He said Bush was surrounded by family.

Early Thursday, McGrath told The Associated Press he had no new information on Bush's condition and that he would release another statement "when events warrant it."

Bush has been hospitalized since Nov. 23, when he was admitted for a lingering cough related to bronchitis after having been in and out of the hospital for complications related to the illness.

A fever that kept Bush in the hospital over Christmas had gotten worse and doctors had put him on a liquids-only diet Wednesday following "a series of setbacks.'

"It's an elevated fever, so it's actually gone up in the last day or two," McGrath told The Associated Press. "It's a stubborn fever that won't go away."

But he said the cough that initially brought Bush to the hospital had improved.

Bush was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, and Neil's wife, Maria, and a grandson, McGrath said. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, was expected to arrive Wednesday in Houston from Bethesda, Md. The 41st president has also been visited twice by his sons, George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida.

Bush and his wife live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

Starbucks to Congress: 'Come together' on fiscal cliff

10 hrs.

Starbucks Corp will use its ubiquitous coffee cups to tell U.S. lawmakers to come up with a deal to avoid going over the "fiscal cliff" and triggering automatic tax hikes and spending cuts.?

Chief Executive Howard Schultz is urging workers in Starbucks' roughly 120 Washington-area shops to write "come together" on customers' cups on Thursday and Friday, as U.S. President Barack Obama and lawmakers return to work and attempt to revive fiscal cliff negotiations that collapsed before the Christmas holiday.?

Starbucks' cup campaign aims to send a message to sharply divided politicians and serve as a rallying cry for the public in the days leading up to lawmakers' January 1 deadline to deliver a plan to avert harsh across-the-board government spending reductions and tax increases that could send the United States back into recession.?

"We're paying attention, we're greatly disappointed in what's going on and we deserve better," Schultz told Reuters in a telephone interview.?

The CEO said he has joined a growing list of high-powered business leaders, politicians and financial experts in endorsing the Campaign to Fix the Debt, (www.fixthedebt.org) a well-funded nonpartisan group that is leaning on lawmakers to put the United States' financial house in order.?

Starbucks plans to amplify its "come together" message via new and old media, including Twitter and Facebook posts, coverage on AOL's local news websites and advertisements in The Washington Post and The New York Times.?

"If (talks) do not progress, we will make this much bigger," Schultz said of the messaging campaign.?

Schultz is no stranger to using the world's biggest coffee chain as a platform to advocate for more political cooperation in Washington.?

During the debt ceiling debate in August 2011, he made a splash by calling for a boycott of political contributions to U.S. lawmakers until they struck a fair and bipartisan deal on the country's debt, revenue and spending.?

"We are facing such dysfunction, irresponsibility and lack of leadership" less than two years after the debt ceiling crisis, Schultz said.?

Washington narrowly avoided a U.S. government default, but not before down-to-the-wire wrangling prompted the country's first-ever debt rating downgrade.?

"There is something so wrong that we can be here again and not have the ability to put party aside for the betterment of the country," said Schultz. "We have the same language and rhetoric. Unfortunately we aren't learning much."?

Broadcom Predicts Top 10 Technology Trends in ... - Tom's Hardware

Android for set top boxes, LTE expansion and NFC expected to go mainstream.

With 2012 now coming to a close, Broadcom has predicted the top 10 technology trends in 2013.

This year saw the rise in smartphones and tablets, with Q3 alone seeing smart-connected devices (PCs, tablets and smartphones) selling over 300 million units. As for 2013, a total of 1.2 billion smartphones and tablets are expected to be sold.

Other notable trends included smartphone/tablet hybrids, 'phablets', as well as the emergence of 5-inch handsets.

Broadcom?s home, hand and infrastructure groups discussed what it believes will be the top 10 technology trends next year, which are as follows:

  1. Simultaneous Video Display Across Devices - "Playing video seamlessly across multiple devices like your smartphone, tablet or laptop will become more commonplace in 2013 as new standards for Wi-Fi enabled devices eliminate interoperability and compatibility issues. This technology, called Miracast?, will soon make its way onto smartphones, TVs, set-top boxes and gaming consoles to simplify sharing and streaming of content. You will soon be able to show the video of your daughter?s Christmas pageant taken from your smartphone on the big screen in the living room without dealing with multiple cables and complicated menus."
  2. NFC: More than Just Payments - "Near-field communications (NFC) has historically been linked to mobile payments, but that could change next year as the technology extends into consumer electronics, with increasingly more manufacturers integrating the chip. It?s already in Nintendo?s Wii U, and ABI Research predicts that 3.5 billion NFC-enabled devices will be in circulation over the next five years. If that?s the case, we may see more tap-to-share applications such as easily syncing phones with a car, transferring video playback from a smartphone to a tablet, or downloading new programming for a remote-control toy."
  3. No Longer for the Luxury Set: Smarter Cars at Lower Cost - "With the adoption of cost-effective standards like Ethernet and WiFi in the car, the cost of adding premium infotainment and advanced safety features has dropped dramatically. No longer confined to luxury-class vehicles, these technologies will make their way into affordable cars beginning in 2013 with Ethernet cost-effectively powering sophisticated add-ons like driver assist and 360 degree surround-view cameras."
  4. Android for Set Top Boxes - "Can Android democratize set top boxes like it has for mobile phones? The platform has advocates and advantages, and in 2013 expect to see the open source technology make its way into the TV and connected home."
  5. LTE Builds Out and Up -?"Adoption of LTE is still in the initial stages but consumers will see widespread coverage in 2013. In North America, Verizon should finish its LTE rollout by June 2013, and the Global Mobile Suppliers Association forecasts that 209 networks will be commercially launched in 75 countries by the end of 2013. GSA also reports that over 500 LTE devices including tablets, femtocells, smartphones, and routers have been introduced this year, a 164% increase compared to the number launched in 2011. LTE coverage is clearly seen as a competitive differentiator by carriers, and as network rollouts accelerate worldwide, manufacturers are responding with products for these markets."
  6. Small Cells Get Rolling -?"According to Infonetics Research, the $5B market opportunity (total for 2012-2013) for small cell backhaul equipment will begin in earnest in 2013. Small cells increase both coverage and capacity for 3G networks while offloading traffic from the macro network. The infrastructure of chipset manufacturers, mobile operators, small cell vendors and backhaul equipment is now in place to start the market growth."
  7. Go Big -?"Look for the first Ultra HD (4Kx2K) TVs to start showing up and for the MPEG-5 codecs and broadband chipsets to start appearing. It won?t be until 2015 we can enjoy this resolution everywhere, but the early adoption of this technology is projected to kick off in 2013."
  8. Emergence of a Software-Defined Networking Ecosystem - "Software-defined networking is far from a nascent concept, but 2012 saw an uptick in SDN?s viability as companies like Cisco, Juniper and VMware made SDN acquisitions to enhance their portfolios. Google has been vocal about their use of OpenFlow to manage their backend traffic on a software-defined network, although a hybrid strategy has been touted as a more holistic approach to implementing SDNs. In 2013 expect an entire ecosystem to coalesce as software developers, network vendors and pure-play SDN shops collaborate to speed SDN?s adoption."
  9. 5G WiFi Everywhere - "Offering improved range, better battery performance, higher capacity and speeds up to three times faster than existing 802.11a/b/g/n networks, 5G WiFi is the latest Wi-Fi standard to accommodate consumers? thirst for content and the proliferation of devices accessing the network. Since Broadcom announced the industry?s first 5G WiFi chip last year, a number of companies have launched products with the 802.11ac technology, including networking products such as routers and client devices like notebooks and PCs. Expect to see more products hit the shelves using next-generation connectivity next year including smartphones, tablets, digital TVs, and more."
  10. Context Awareness - "GPS technology has made navigating the globe seamless, eliminating the need for road maps and detailed directions from friends. But GPS has limitations. As soon as you walk indoors, that GPS connection is broken. Whereas 2012 was the year of buzz around indoor navigation, 2013 will elevate to the next level: ?context awareness.? Context awareness goes beyond navigation by culling data from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and sensors in your phone to provide you with intelligent information on your location and surroundings. So perhaps you?re in Best Buy in the TV section and you receive a coupon real-time for a 5% discount on Smart TVs. Or your phone alerts you that you need to leave now for a meeting because there was an accident on the freeway and it?s going to take twice as long as usual. Oh, and bring an umbrella because it?s raining where you?re headed. Smartphones keep getting smarter."

What 2013 Holds for Technology | Products ... - Epoch Times

Joshua Philipp

Created: December 24, 2012 Last Updated: December 24, 2012

By charting the course of technology over the last several years and predicting its continued path, it?s fair to say that we have an interesting year ahead of us.

The largest shift will take place in how we interact with computers. Touch screens on smartphones and tablets brought in human touch, Siri popularized voice-controlled systems, and the hacker community has begun to advance thought-controlled computing with EEG headsets. Voice, touch, and thought will slowly join the keyboard and mouse as ways to interact with electronics, and 2013 will see a new level in this shift.

The other major shift will be the return of the robotics market?starting with the popularization of drones and robots as toys.

Rise of the Hybrids

Let?s face it, laptops are just too heavy and too clumsy when there?s not a desk or table nearby. But tablets aren?t perfect either. Sometimes we need more power, so we use both a tablet and a notebook. And sometimes we just need a keyboard, so we?ve found ourselves attaching keyboards to our tablets, which ironically makes them not much different from notebooks.

Thus, from the rift between tablets and notebooks, the hybrid emerged. These are touch-screen notebooks that convert into tablets, such as the Toshiba U925t, Asus Taichi, and Sony Tap 20. When you need a notebook, they become notebooks. When you need a tablet, they become tablets.

Hybrids are just starting to become practical, however, and this is thanks to Windows 8. The major hurdle with hybrids is the operating system?do you use a full-fledged operating system, or one meant for mobile devices and tablets? Windows 8 includes both, allowing users to switch between a conventional Windows interface and a spiffy new one ideal for touch screens.

In 2013, expect to see Microsoft dominate the hybrid market. Since Mac OSX is only usable on Apple computers, Apple will not create a hybrid operating system until they release a hybrid computer. As for Google, its flagship operating system, Android, is intended for smartphones and tablets, and until they release a hybrid Chromebook, it is also unlikely they will release a hybrid operating system.

Yet, as developers shift the market to hybrid computers and touch screen notebooks, Apple and Google will need to follow Microsoft?s lead or risk falling behind. It is likely both companies will release hybrid operating systems?paired with hybrid computers?by 2014, although they may appear in 2013 if Microsoft?s hybrids outpace the popularity of their own devices.

EEGs and Thought-Controlled Computing

When Emotiv first announced the EPOC in 2008, it was backed by a new vision of human-computer interaction. The headset with 14 electrodes uses electroencephalography (EEG) technology to detect the electric signals emitted by the brain, and translates these into computer commands. It allows users to control their computers with thoughts, emotions, and subtle movements.

At just $300, the EPOC was meant to bring EEG technology into the mainstream. Yet, it was too far ahead of its time. It was written off as more of a novel science fiction concept than a practical tool.

Despite the mainstream market never taking to EEGs, the technology was kept alive by the U.S. military, health researchers, and a small circle of software developers. And the odd inventions of this community have brought EEG systems into the public eye.

Videos of people using prosthetic limbs using their thoughts have gone viral. Researchers, such as the folks from the CNRS-AIST Joint Robotics Laboratory are creating thought-controlled robots that can be used like real-world avatars by paralyzed people.

And now, a new hip-looking EEG headband is on its way to the mainstream market. After nearly doubling its goal on crowd-funding website, Indiegogo, the MUSE indents to make EEG systems not only practical, but also stylish.

With its four electrodes, the MUSE sends your brainwave data to your smartphone or tablet and lets you see how your brain is performing, similar to a heart rate monitor. The MUSE is also open to software developers, and the more you use it, the more accurate it becomes. InteraXon, the company behind the MUSE, is working on accompanying technology that will let users use the MUSE with their phones or televisions?maybe allowing them to turn off a television if they drift off to sleep.

In 2013, EEG technology will begin drawing more attention, although it will likely not become mainstream until 2015. Health systems using EEG technology will become much more prominent in 2013, however, particularly among paralyzed people and for individuals, thanks to the already growing community of independent developers.

Voice Recognition Features

Voice recognition software is by no means new. Software developers such as Nuance have been working on it for years, Microsoft Word 2002 had speech recognition features, and even your pre-smartphone phone likely had speech recognition features built in. But the technology never got much attention until Apple announced Siri?s integration into the iPhone 4S in 2011.

Siri changed the landscape for voice recognition, although the system did little if anything different from pre-existing tools?even Siri itself started off as an app in the App Store that was available on all iPhone models. Siri?s popularity, however, was fueled by clever marketing, and its charm was in its near seamless integration into the iPhone 4S.

Along with Siri?s popularization, so too is growing the popularity of voice recognition systems on other platformers, including Android.

In 2013, expect voice recognition systems to grow more popular on smartphones and tablets. As people grow more accustomed to voice-to-text systems, and the ability to control computer functions with voice, expect voice recognition to begin growing more popular on laptops and notebooks by early 2014.

Return of the Robots

In 2008, the home robotics market was about to hit it big. Telepresence robots like the Rovio WowWee intended to let you visit family members or go to the office when you were away. Companies like iRobot were releasing robots that would help around the house by cleaning and vacuuming.

The market for household robotics was crushed by the financial crisis. But development continued nonetheless, thanks to independent developers and the U.S. military?s ever-growing interest in drones and bomb disposal robots.

Now the market is starting to return, although in a much different direction than was expected in 2008. In 2013, expect drones and robots to become more popular as toys. The massive success of the Robot Dragonfly on crowd-funding website Indiegogo is a testament to this, bringing in close to $950,000 on its $110,000 funding goal.

The palm-sized Robot Dragonfly can hover and fly around, and is meant for aerial photography, new forms of gaming, and home security. Similar household drones are coming out with similar purposes, replacing the remote-controlled helicopters of yesteryear. Drones are also making their way from remote battlefields to local police and border patrol stations.

Meanwhile, the DIY community is hard at work developing robots of their own, thanks to an open source system called Arduino and a dedicated community open to sharing their designs. This has led to robot toys from small companies like ArcBotics, and books such as ?Make an Arduino-Controlled Robot,? by Michael Margolis.

Expect drones and robots to become more common as household toys in 2013, and as kids make them fly and scoot around parks, expect them to grow in popularity. And as their popularity grows, in the coming year, expect independent developers and small companies to build on existing technology and find common uses for robots and drones for household chores.

Syria envoy seeks peace as clashes rage

BEIRUT (Reuters) - International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi pursued mediation efforts in Damascus on Tuesday, but there was no pause in the bloodletting as Syrian Christians marked a bleak Christmas Day with prayers for peace.

"We are here in a cave that symbolizes Syria right now," said a priest standing beside a nativity scene in a grotto.

"It is cold here but the door is open to all refugees," he told Syrian state TV. "Amid the hunger, cold and deprivation, we still have hope for peace and love for our country."

More than 44,000 Syrians have been killed since a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad erupted 21 months ago, igniting an increasingly sectarian conflict that broadly pits a Sunni Muslim majority against Assad's Alawite minority.

Christians, many of whom have been reluctant to join what they see as an Islamist-tinged insurgency, feel threatened.

Bishop John Kawak, speaking on state TV, said the Christmas holiday was "a symbol for the rebirth of the nation". He condemned "terrorism", the government's term for the rebellion.

Brahimi met some dissidents who are tolerated by Assad but rejected by the mainstream opposition and by rebels fighting to oust him, a day after he held talks with the Syrian president.

There was no word on any progress in the U.N.-Arab League' envoy's drive to end violence that has intensified in recent months as Assad uses airpower and artillery against rebel gains.

Raja Naser, secretary general of the National Coordination Body, said after meeting Brahimi that the envoy planned a week of meetings in Damascus and would stay until Sunday.

"There is still a lot of concern but there is also great hope that these meetings with other Syrian officials will result in some agreements or positive developments," he said.

But most opposition groups appear frustrated with Brahimi's quest for a deal on a transitional government. He has not clarified any role for Assad, whose foes say he must simply go, arguing that too much blood has been shed for any other outcome.

GULF PLEA

Gulf Arab leaders, who have long called for Assad's removal and some of whom have helped the rebels with guns and money, urged swift world action to halt the "massacres" and violations of international law in Syria.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported clashes and government shelling in hotspots across the country, including towns on the eastern outskirts of Damascus.

Abu Nidal, a spokesman for the Rebel Military Council in Damascus, said fighters had killed the head of a local security branch in the capital's suburb of Jaramana, home to a large Christian and Druze population.

In his Christmas message to the world on Tuesday, Pope Benedict encouraged Syrians not to lose hope for peace.

"May peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict which does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims," he said.

"I appeal for an end to the bloodshed, easier access for the relief of refugees and the displaced, and dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict."

Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled abroad to escape the daily violence. Those who remain face severe shortages of food, fuel and other essentials as winter weather takes a grip.

Syrian activists offered a message of solidarity with Christians despite rising tensions in central Hama province, where rebels have demanded that Christian villages let them enter to force out the army and pro-Assad "shabbiha" militias.

"We say to the Christians, you are our brothers and our beloved, and your holiday is our holiday," said Abu Faisal, a Hama activist who posted a Christmas message on the Internet.

"The rebels are surrounding (the Christian town) Muhardeh to get rid of Assad's soldiers and shabbiha, but we have not forgotten your honorable stance when you took care of our refugees when the army entered Hama," he said.

"We will not accept that you are targeted by hatred, you are our brothers and our friends."

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Tips To ...

Do you want to expand the reach of your business and earn more revenue? Web marketing is where you want to be! Marketing online is a cost effective and simple way to get more sales. In this article, you?ll find out some effective techniques for getting great results from this form of marketing.

No web marketing venture will succeed through luck alone, so remember that it always takes hard work and dedication. You would be hard pressed to find a business that will attribute their success to the forces of fate. Top leading brands never get where they are today with pure luck. Not really! It took quite a bit of skilled marketing to turn it into a best-seller.

Always avoid spamming your customers. Although it can be cost efficient to spam sites with your information, it always ends up drawing negative feedback towards you site and it never ends well. Actually, impersonal advertising will turn off people giving them the opposite effect you intended to give.

TIP! It is important for Internet marketing purposes that websites are kept somewhat simple, and this is often overlooked by webmasters. Multimedia programs like Flash and Silverlight are very tempting to site owners so many designers use them when building sites.

Consider advertising your business online to increase its visibility. It is worth the money in the long run because advertising your business will play a huge role in how much business you receive. This helps you gain customers that you may not have gotten using other methods.

You have probably heard that you shouldn?t mix your business with your personal life. However, this can be an exception to the rule. The reason is, because you don?t have as much pressure put on you, therefore, this can be seen as a hobby. Involve your significant other, and make a go of it together.

A great Online marketing tip is to become an expert in the field you are dealing with. This helps establish credibility if you have true, relevant content.

TIP! Mobile marketing is a great, innovative way to reach more potential customers and increase your sales. A great option is to offer texts when there are specials from your site for people to see.

You should always remember that headlines sell when writing, so always use them in your promotional materials. These should be very upbeat and have a great catch to them. You could even forgo the headline and add a graphic of what you?re trying to sell. The idea is to relay a message in an impactful way while still remaining professional.

One way to draw new visitors to your site is offering a free online course. The beauty of this approach is that you can tie the course to a product that is related, and prompt purchases. You may wish to run an ad campaign detailing the course.

It is simple to use email marketing when advertising your products, but it is always best to learn additional ways to market your products. Once you know what to do, you can use mass mailers, build lists and utilize auto-responders for marketing purposes. Also, the experience you pick up can help you in the future.

TIP! Focus on a single, overarching goal for your website, then pursue it relentlessly. Determine the type of content you would like to write as well as the directories you want to submit to.

Your banner ads should stand out from the crowd as much as possible. People will be convinced to click on your banner ad when you make your banner ads more exciting.

Most people will respect someone with an important title. If you let people know who you are, they know you run the show. Go with describing your position as the President or the CEO.

TIP! When trying to get people to advertise your site or have them link to it, make it simple for them to do so by including a link to us button. Those who enjoy your site will be able to provide a link back to you by simply clicking that button you have provided.

Giving yourself a title will show your importance. If the business is yours, then become the CEO. If you?re not a business owner, still look for a powerful title. Use your title in the signature line of your emails and articles.

Give some of your profit to charity to encourage sales. Everyone who visits your website should plainly see that their purchases will help support the charity, although you don?t want to push it in their faces left and right. You do not have to give up a huge amount in order to impress customers.

Many people won?t believe ad copy. The fact is that most folks aren?t buying the stuff they read in advertisements, so don?t turn them off by simply talking big. Because of this, you should be ready to back up your claims with evidence. Use commentaries, reviews, testimonials, and research to back you up. Do not make claims that you can?t back up with proof. Treat your customers as intelligent and informed people. Do not cheat customers. Your reputation in the years ahead will reflect how you treat your customers, and those that are well-treated will continue to return constantly.

TIP! Guaranteeing your product in your advertising is a great way to build customer confidence. Customers are more likely to buy a product if they don?t have to worry about losing money.

Talk with other businesses and retailers online to create bundle deals of services and products that you could sell for less in volume. This method allows you to link several markets, which will generate more sales for you. Online travel services are the quintessential example of good packaging. They combine the services of airplane ticketing, car rental and hotel booking, generating higher sales volume for all three and making their own tidy profit. This strategy is ideal for businesses with complementary or supplemental products that are linked, yet are not considered substitutes or rivals.

Try to make your website interactive. You will get more traffic if you offer a way for your customers can talk to each other. You will be on the minds of your customers as well. Provide your site?s visitors with graphics that they can post up on their own personal websites. This is great, free advertising for you.

Always provide your customers with added incentives to refer people to your business. You can easily turn one sale into five by offering customers a free product or a refund for referring five friends to the site. It always feels great to get free extras, and the increased traffic should really help your bottom line.

TIP! You should ask for feedback all of the time. This particular factor can prove really critical to your overall success, since your perspective of your site appearance and pricing structure might not match the perspective of others.

Use this advice to take your business to the next level. By now, you know that online marketing is among the best strategies for reaching out to more prospective customers. Remember these tips for Affiliate marketing strategies and gain new customers.

WeChat Trademark And Tencent' s Problem in Trademark ...

u=1364176128,1836969918&fm=11&gp=0(By You Yunting) In recent, several medias have interviewed the author on the squatting of ???? trademark, which is the name of a LBS software of Tencent Inc. (the ?Tencent?), and the English name of it is WeChat. The story of it is: A company admitted in Beijing (the ?Beijing Company?) made its trademark application of ???? in Class 38 on 17th January of 2011. Tencent, who runs WeChat (????) software, made its own application several a week later on 24th. For the first application principle, Tencent?s application has been refused by the authority. And part of Beijing Company?s application has also been refused, while part of it was opposed. Currently, WeChat (????), the hit product of Tencent, is with no any records in Class 38, which is the most related class for the app.

But it seems that the problem occurred is not limited to this. As checked by the author, Tencent has only applied its trademark in Class 9 and Class 38, not covering all other classes related to the software, which also contributed to the fall of some prominent classes. By the rough retrieval, the Class 35 of online advertising, the Class 36 of finance, Class 41 of online gaming and Class 42 of program design, website and date exchange have all been first registered by third parties. And it is beyond the question that the above registration would impair the control of Tencent over the WeChat (????) brand, and the further progress of the brand. As the professional engaging in the trademark protection and has the experience in large scale company of the IPR management, the author would like to discuss the issue on how to settle the Internet companies in trademark management.

I. The process of the new product launching

The issue to some extent is mainly resulted by the internal process defect of Tencent, and that once experienced by the author. In 2005, Shanda launched three new products, including EZbox, EZpod and EZmini. But the product releasing was not informed to the management department in advance, which led to the squatting of the names of the new products and no remedy could be found to fully recover that losses. For that incidence, the IPR department as the author worked in at that time shall of no excuse to take the liability, but the development of the products is under confidence and would not be released in prior. Aside from the liability taking, we made the remedies as follows:

(1) To make the supplementary trademark application of the product;

(2) To take over the power of domain name application so that to ensure the synchronized application of domain name and trademark;

(3) To make the rules on the management of trademark, copyright and patent within the company, and to demand the signing by the IPR department before the releasing of the new product;

(4) To deliver the IPR training to all the staffs of the company, and as got known by the author in last month, a PPT made for internal training in 2005 is still spreading among the legal departments of some online game companies.

II. The problem of matching between the application and amounts of new product

If the author is still working in the IPR department, undoubtedly I would be headache with the trademark management, for what faced me is a company with millions of products and would update its library each month. And therefore you could imagine the major liability on the shoulder of me and my colleagues, for the accident may happen in every single absence of mind. Tencent, as a company with the market value above billions, shall surely have its own IPR management system, and yet not known for what reason, the giant could precluded its popular app from the management system this time. As showed in Baidu library, WeChat (????) was officially launched in January of 2011, but not until December of that year did Tencent registered its Chinese name a trademark. That may be accused of its development team is resided in Guangzhong, apart from the headquarter in Shenzhen or Beijing, the town concentrating Tencent?s main business.

In addition to the avoidance of the mistake making, to make a better job shall also be taken into account. Generally, each company shall have its general trademark application form, which indicates the scope of 10 most popular products or services. But considering Tencent has thousands of products, and each of them is with different function and service object. Once to select the generic product when registering the trademark, it is obviously that the purpose of product protection could not be fulfilled. Shanda used to own a coded product, and when made the original application, the product chose was as same as those for the online games, but as later found by the company, the original application did not include the coded product, and thereby the company has to remake its application for no other alternatives are available. But once the careful selection is made for each single product, the IPR department could not feed that demand for the limitation on the staff numbers. And for the large companies like Tencent, the outsourcing of the business to other companies would also bring the risk of trade secret violation.

In addition, the application catalogue of the trademark office is updating from time to time, and how to make the company get the most matching application over their latest product or service is also an issue for the company. Like on 14th December of 2012, the State Trademark Office updated many products that maybe applied the trademark in accordance with the latest issued classification. And the classes related to Tencent include Class 9 of computer gaming software, Class 28 of game console, Class 38 of online BBS and Class 42 of software operation [SaaS],etc.

III. The issue of synchronization of the trademark protection and product development

About two years ago, the author once wrote an article ?Legal Enlightenment of Tencent Trademark Application Strategy?, which is focusing on the trademark registration of Tencent. And of my views then, ?Tencent would make a full-class registration for the most important product, while for some ordinary product the registration would only cover the most related class?. But the question is, all the products have their own process of development, some originally not eye-catching products could be the ?star? product someday in the future. And by then, whether the trademark and other IPR protection measures of the company could keep pace with the development is essential to the company, or otherwise the problems could be foreseen.

At the end of 2011, namely the start of WeChat, the trademark registration by Tencent in Class 9 and Class 38 would not arise any problems. But with the rapid development of it since the beginning of 2012, from instant messaging software to a platform of the network communication, the trademark protection then shall keep pace with the product development. But to our disappointment, Tencent has not made that all-class registration, which has directly led to the squatting by others in the class of E-commerce, gaming and online finance. That is not a question to be seen in single, but a systematic problem. When the business department is focusing on the product development, they would not know how many skills in the trademark application. But as the management organ of IPR department, due to being trapped in the tedious and detailed works, and combating with piracy, lawsuit and competition with the rival, they are highly possible could not spare more time to the legal protection on the product. After the event, we suggest Tencent to develop a rapid protection system on the product protection. And to evaluate the rapid developed product and the protection from IPR department.

Is the Amazon Rainforest Drying Out?

The trees and vegetation of the Peruvian Amazon are adapting to a warmer, drier future?but can they adapt fast enough?

Roads and fields fragment the forest, drying it faster, changing precipitation patterns and making it more difficult for species to shift their ranges to adapt to climate change. TARAPOTO, Peru? For tropical ecologist Gregory Asner, flying over the Peruvian Amazon from the town of Tarapoto is like traveling back in time. Modern houses, rice paddies and oil palm plantations give way to steep, forested mountains and then to green, unbroken forest that curves toward the horizon.

Suddenly the tree canopy below the twin-engine plane turns a mottled gray-brown, a sign of drought damage that he estimates may affect as many as half the trees.

In this remote corner of Peru?s Ucayali region, Asner, a tropical ecologist at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University, is afraid he is seeing the future. In the last few years this patch of forest has been hit by two ?once-in-a-century droughts??one in 2005 and another in 2010. These dry spells may become more frequent as temperatures in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean rise and as humans burn thousands of square kilometers of forest for farming. Although it has seen warmer temperatures in the past, the western Amazon is under siege now from a combination of a warming climate and human population growth that it has never faced before, and scientists are scrambling to determine whether existing protected areas will be enough to buffer against the changes to come.

Behind the plane Asner glimpses smoke rising from fires set to clear land for farming. Migration from the Andean highlands has boosted Peru?s Amazonian states to the top of the population growth chart, and the influx of people is taking a toll on the forest.

Peru?s Ministry of Environment?using satellite images and Carnegie-provided software?calculates that the country lost about 6,475 square kilometers of forest, an area the size of Delaware, between 2005 and 2009, up from some 4,550 square kilometers in the five previous years. Losing forest reduces precipitation, further stressing the remaining trees. ?About 50 percent of the rain that falls in the Amazon is generated by the forest itself, through transpiration and evaporation,? Asner says. ?Deforestation exacerbates the drought problem, because it removes that internal engine.?

Clearing fields and pastures also leaves more exposed forest edges, drying out the interior and making it more likely to burn if an agricultural fire escapes. Fires during the 2005 and 2010 droughts added 3.8 gigatons of carbon to the atmosphere, according to Simon Lewis, a forest ecologist at University College London. In recent genetic studies Lewis found that Amazonian trees have weathered past climatic warming, but the changes were slower then and were not exacerbated by humans, he says.

Faced with warmer, drier conditions, trees have three options:

?Individuals can acclimate, species can adapt or migrate, or they go extinct,? says Kenneth Feeley, a biologist at Florida International University. A floral species can expand its range into a cooler region, but only as fast as seed dispersal allows. Feeley, who studies trees on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes, was surprised to see range changes there in just a few years. ?Species are moving upslope about three vertical meters a year?that?s really fast,? he says, although perhaps not fast enough. ?Based on the climate change that?s already happening, they need to move nine or 10 vertical meters a years.?

In the lowlands, deforestation reduces the areas to which species can move, and fields, pastures and roads create barriers to dispersal. Peru has some large protected areas, such as Man? National Park, where Feeley does his work, but scientists don?t know if they are big enough?or in the right places?to allow species to migrate in a rapidly changing climate.
