New U.K. Foundation to Assist Holocaust ... - eJewish Philanthropy

A new grant-giving charitable foundation, Six Point Foundation, is calling on members of the Jewish community to come forward if they were direct victims of Nazi persecution or refugees, fugitives or emigrants from Nazi Germany or Nazi occupied territories, as they may be eligible to financial assistance. From concentration camp survivors to kindertransport children, many people are expected to benefit from the ?4 million available. It is hoped that this much needed financial assistance will enable many people to improve their lives.

Six Point Foundation will make small grants for specific purposes, which will be one off contributions in most cases and could include the following:

• Medical costs such as dental care
• Travel costs
• Specialist equipment such as beds and stairlifts
• White goods such as fridges and washing machines
• Heating costs
• Repairs to essential household appliances

These one-off grants will make a substantial difference to the recipients lives, particularly where individual households exist on minimal income and have few if any savings to rely on.

Six Point Foundation was established to distribute funds raised from the disposal of land and property assets owned by the Otto Schiff Housing Association. The Foundation will have a limited life span, remaining operational for 5-7 years, or until all the funds have been distributed.

Those who feel that they may be eligible to funding should visit Six Point Foundation?s website where they or members of their family will be able to fill out an application form to apply for grant funding.

Charitable organisations will also be eligible to apply for grants to fund specific projects, which can be an extension of an existing project or a new proposal and that will ultimately benefit those for whom the Foundation was established.

Majid Rafizadeh: The International Community and How Syria's Civil War Differs

Although Iran, Iraq and Lebanon have taken almost the same position in warning about the possibility of civil war in case of the ouster of Assad, they have different concerns and objectives in regard with this issue. Being bordered with Syria and having lived through civil wars, Iraq and Lebanon are understandably worried about the spill-over of the instability and Syria's civil war to their country. However, for the Islamic Republic of Iran, the civil war in Syria would mean that the Islamic Republic of Iran would lose a centralized government and strategically important country in the region. Therefore, it would have a considerable effect on the balance of power between Iran and the rest of Arab countries, particularly Saudi Arabia.

The Iraqi officials' concerns are resonated in Iraqi prime minister's remarks. According to al-Maliki when he told the Associated Press during an interview, "The situation in Syria is dangerous." He added that "Things should be dealt with appropriately so that the spring in Syria does not turn into a winter." Additionally, he pointed out that he would avoid for calling for Assad's removal: "The killing or removal of President Bashar in any way will explode into an internal struggle between two groups and this will have an impact on the region." Lebanon also abstained from suspending Syria's membership from the Arab League.

The number of Syrian soldiers being defected from the army is growing to a point that it has reached around 25,000 soldiers. These defected soldiers are mainly from the low rank Sunni officials who defy the order of the high Alawite officials. Their leader is reported to be Riad al-As'ad, a former Syrian colonel; and they have called so far for no-fly zone. Additionally UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay pointed out at a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that, "The Syrian authorities' continual ruthless oppression, if not stopped now, can drive the country into a full-fledged civil war." The United Nations Human Rights council have also passed a resolution that "strongly condemns the continued widespread, systematic and gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms by the Syrian authorities, such as arbitrary executions, excessive use of force and the killing and persecution of protesters, human rights defenders and journalists, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, torture and ill-treatment, including against children."

More than 5,500 people have been killed and among them are hundreds of children, according to Navi Pillay. Moreover, according to Sergio Paulho Pinheiro, chairman of the independent international commission of inquiry, November was the deadliest month for children, where 56 children were killed.

Many analysts have resembled the possible civil war in Syria to the one in Iraq, but it is crucial to know that full-fledged civil war in Syria would have a different character than the one in Iraq and it would be more destructive in terms of human lives' losses and regional instability. Because of the complexity of social, religious and ethnic fabric of the Syrian society, the civil war would not take only one dimention. For example, it would not be only a civil war between different religious sects as we saw in Iraq -- Sunni opposed to Shia -- or in case of Syria Alawite opposed to Sunni.

The civil war will take both ethnic and religious dimensions. The religious sects are not only Alawite and the Sunni -- there are Christan, Druze and Shia. Tensions between different ethnicities Arab and Non-Arab ( Kurds and Druze) would add fuel to the battle. For instance, In Syria, there are Kurds who are Sunni but also there are Kurds who are Alawites. In this scenarios, any ethnic groups or religious groups who don't participate in the war and don't take side would be consider traitors and would not be left alone secure. This would have tremendous disastrous impacts on the life of hundreds of thousands of Syrian children, women and innocent young men.

timeshare - Travel & Leisure Group a hit at Destinations Travel Show ...

RDO and TATOC affiliated timeshare specialists the Travel & Leisure Group recently represented the industry at the Earls Court Destinations Travel Show.

Destinations: The Holiday and Travel Show, hosted by broadsheet giant the Times between the 2nd and 5th of February 2012, saw tens of thousands of holiday lovers, tourism experts and interested passers-by descend upon Earls Court. Despite the chilly weather and difficult travelling conditions over the weekend, the show was still very well attended, with Travel & Leisure taking their place at the event alongside travel industry giants Saga, Marriott and numerous travel boards from across the world among the hundreds of stands.

Several members of Suffolk-based Travel & Leisure?s experienced sales, marketing and legal teams manned the stand across the four days, and Commercial Manager Peter Lydford felt that the presence of the company at the event went a long way towards reassuring concerned timeshare owners and displayed the friendly face of the timeshare resales industry to a whole new audience.

?We were really pleased with the way things went at Earls Court. The company are well aware that the timeshare industry has been dragged through the mud over recent years so it was hugely beneficial to be able to meet people face to face and show them exactly what timeshare resales are all about. We hope that our presence at the show went some way to restoring a bit of faith and credibility in timeshare and going forward we will continue to strive to improve the image of the industry.?

As an added bonus for those who paid Travel & Leisure?s stand a visit, the company, who have now been successfully operating as timeshare resellers for just under 20 years, ran a competition in which one lucky winner could secure a luxury two night stay at the Mill House Bed & Breakfast in the historic Suffolk market town of Sudbury. The happy beneficiary of the prize, which also includes a sumptuous dinner for two at Marco Pierre White?s fantastic restaurant The Angel, was Mr A. T. Chappell of Upminster in Essex.

Mr Chappell wasn?t the only one to gain a lot from talking to the Travel & Leisure team, with senior sales consultants Gavin Brown Eidsgard, Steve Frankland and Kellie Hammond offering insightful and unbiased advice to those who wished to learn more about the timeshare industry, helping them to learn how buying and selling timeshare works and passing on useful information about resorts, fees and contracts. All in all, the four days were a great success for both the Travel & Leisure Group and the time share resale industry as a whole.
