Gaps need to be plugged in government website offering health ...

Three years ago, the feds created an online portal at HealthCare.gov to help folks, especially the uninsured, navigate the muddy and mushrooming marketplace of health-care plan options.

While the site is seeing successes, some bugs must be worked out so consumers can obtain complete and accurate information about benefits and prices, according to a report released this week by the inspector general for the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services.

The office found these gaps, among others:

* Insurance products and plans showcased on the website?s ?plan finder? aren?t always available for sale. Some offerings weren?t even recognized by representatives of insurance operators contacted by the inspector general. If the products were available, almost 20 percent of the data displayed didn?t match details provided by insurance operators.

* While most private insurers reported detailed benefit data to the plan finder, as required under the Affordable Care Act, the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services didn?t follow up with insurers that failed to furnish the information. The agency also still hasn?t identified the full universe of providers required to report data.

CMS officials generally agreed with the report, the inspector general said, and are taking taking steps to close the gaps.
